Belonging/s in the Almariya and entretiempos was an attempt to question (and answer) what a sonic exploration of cultural heritage reveals about interconnected histories of colonialism and migration between Mexican and Sri Lankan cultural identity. Moreover, this collaborative project examines how soundscape and composition create a sense of shared memory and identity for migrant diaspora populations while preserving and disseminating heritage and cultural education. Ultimately, the artworks question how sound, as a medium, can be used to de-center the visual narrative in contemporary heritage studies, to reveal the local cosmopolitan of influence that colors stories of migration that visual or written documentation cannot.
